Meet Your New Favorite Chateauneuf:
Domaine La Barroche

Looking for a Chateauneuf-du-Pape that perfectly balances old-school soul with modern finesse? We're thrilled to spotlight a producer in Chateauneuf-du-Pape that's been flying under the radar while quietly crafting some of the region's most exciting wines.

Since 1703, Domaine La Barroche has exemplified exceptional winemaking in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, with siblings Julien and Laetitia Barrot now steering this prestigious 15-hectare estate. What sets La Barroche apart is its unique terroir composition - 80% sandy topsoil over limestone bedrock - and its century-old Grenache vines, which form the foundation of their remarkable portfolio. From the flagship CDP, a masterful blend of old-vine Grenache with traditional Rhone varieties that matures for 20 months in a combination of tulip-shaped concrete tanks, old oak casks, and 600-liter barrels, to the pure expression of terroir in Pure Rouge (97% old-vine Grenache) which spends 18 months in old oak casks, each wine tells a compelling story. The romantic Fiancee develops for 20 months in foudres, marries century-old Grenache with young Syrah, while Pure Blanc showcases rare 100% Clairette from iron-rich soils and rests for 15 months in demi-muids barrels on its lees. Their innovative Liberty cuvee, a Grenache-based blend aged 18 months in old oak casks and 600-liter barrels, rounds out this exceptional collection. Each plot, from the sandy slopes of Les Terres Blanches to the mythical Grand Pierre with its distinctive red Comtat sandstone, contributes to wines that are simultaneously fresh, elegant, and opulent.

Barroche Chateauneuf du Pape 2019 AG93 $320
The 2019 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Julien Barrot is a blend of 61% Grenache, 18% Mourvedre, 13% Syrah, 5% Cinsaut, 1% Vaccarèse and other permitted varieties. The 2019 Julien Barrot showcases delicate aromas of just ripe red and black fruits, mint, licorice and dried herbs. Tightly-structured and muscular, it is a full-bodied and polished red with good flavor concentration, kept in check by refreshing acidity.

Barroche Chateauneuf du Pape Pure 2020 AG95 $900
Winemaker Julien Barrot is making a much more elegant rendition of single varietal Grenache Chateauneuf-du-Pape Pure, compared to the 2005 vintage of this cuvée with its otherworldly complexity and intensity. The 2020 vintage opens up with enticing aromas of crushed violets, blood orange, raspberry, forest strawberry, black cherry, dried herbs, mint and licorice. Showing absolutely no hard edges, plush tannins envelop the palate of this full-bodied red impeccably well balanced by lively acids. The taster is left with a bold finish that goes on for well over a minute. Only 4,500 bottles produced.

Barroche Chateauneuf du Pape Pure Blanc 2020 AG94 $1000
The 2020 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Pure is a show-stopper. It wafts from the glass with enticing aromas of honeysuckle, yellow apple, white peach, lemon and lime zest and hints of dried ginger. On the palate it is round and slightly viscous, carrying a medium to full-body kept in check by lively acidity. Like in 2019, only 1,200 bottles were produced.
