Quintarelli

Giuseppe Quintarelli, a name that has become synonymous with top notch Amarone della Valpolicella for many years. If you are not familiar with these wines yet, now is definitely the time to know them. Although their history stretches back 1924, it was Giuseppe, or Bepi as his close friends fondly call him, who has been largely responsible for the success of this small domain. Bearing similarities to many iconic growers, his story centers on an era where mass produced wines were favored over quality. Quintarelli challenged this norm by focussing its efforts on attention to detail in the vineyards, lowering yields and ensuring sufficient ripening of their grapes. And this quality-driven style translates not only into some of the most complex, intense and long-lived Amarones that are aged for seven years in Slavonian oak barrels, but also into their Valpolicella and other cuvées.

Above all, Quintarelli is an innovator and this can be clearly seen across the wines he produces, which among the rare Amarones is also his Primofiore IGT, "first flower", an Amarone-styled wine that blends the traditional Corvina and Corvinone grapes with Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon in what one might even call a "Super-Veneto" wine.

His Alzero takes this one step further with a full Bordeaux-blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Franc and Merlot made in the Amarone style by dry-concentrating the grapes for several months before pressing and fermenting.

And for those who love wacky blends, his Bianco Secco is a big blend of Garganega, Trebbiano Toscano, Sauvignon Bianco, Chardonnay, and Saorin, making for a very complex,
exotic white wine.
