Grenache has earned its reputation as a crucial blending partner in Chateauneuf du Pape, often making up the majority with many top producers in the region. The legendary Chateau Rayas takes the lead with their wines using 100% Grenache, and several others such as Clos des Papes to Henri Bonneau often use a large percentage in their blends too.
Though often associated with high alcohol, Rayas has often been known for their ethereal, elegant and seamless CDP. It is this astounding quality that has led Rhone-lovers to chase endlessly after their wines.
Lately though, we have seen some exciting Grenache from other regions traditionally known for robust, powerful and alcoholic wines. The humorously named Comando G is one clear example, with their high altitude biodynamic vineyards in Sierra de Gredos, not far from Madrid, using Rayas as a benchmark for their winemaking style. Over in Priorat, we have Nin Ortiz and Terroir al Limit who are both defying tradition with their super high altitude planting of Garnacha (local name for Grenache) that has allowed for some very elegant wines that are also compared to Rayas.
